High School: Grades 9-12

A great high school experience can put your child on a trajectory of lifelong success. At AISK, it is our goal to prepare students for the many possibilities before them. We believe high school is a chance for students to hone their skills, identify their passions, and learn who they are in relation to the world — all while preparing academically for a seamless transition into higher education. We recognize the range of gifts, abilities, and interests of our students, and have provided a Sure Path to University for successful university placement in senior year.

As students prepare for bright futures, they enjoy a broad range of experiences that allow them to utilize their creativity, discover new horizons, and build lifelong relationships. These experiences not only help shape their choices, but make lasting memories. When graduates return to AISK as alumni, they are not short on stories of how their time here influenced who they have become.

The IB program challenged me in a way that I had not been challenged before, and I really had to learn how to stay dedicated and committed, and how to manage my time, no matter how stressed or overwhelmed I was. That really helped me throughout university and through med school.

High School Curriculum

All courses in Grades 6-10 are linked to AERO (American Education Reaches Out), NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) and other subject-specific standards to provide teachers with a framework for planning and implementation of lessons.

Students in Grade 9 and 10 study a balanced selection of courses that include Math, English, a modern language, the Arts, Humanities, Physical Education, Science, and Strategies of Success, while exploring their academic options for the future.

In Grades 11 and 12, students have a sure path to university and may choose to study the IB Diploma Program—an academically challenging curriculum with externally assessed examinations that prepare students for university and life beyond. Depending on what they choose to pursue at the tertiary level students may opt for a hybrid model of IB Courses and High School courses or prefer to complete their secondary education pursuing only high school courses and the SAT test.

A Holistic Approach to Learning

The academic program at AISK is designed to prepare students for tertiary education in the United States and around the world. Our high school curriculum is rigorous, but students are supported by caring faculty who provide one-on-one mentoring and guidance from ninth through twelfth grade.

Tailored education paths allow students to begin pursuing their higher education goals early-on. Some students who complete our IB degree program enter college as a sophomore, maximizing their time and money.

We recognize the range of gifts, abilities and interests of our students and offer a dynamic learning paradigm. Our goals for each student are the development of:

●      Skills for living (global awareness and adaptability)
●      Tools for working (information literacy/information communication and technology tools)

A 1:1 digital device program ensures every student has access to media options which maximize their learning. Data analysis, data representation, information presentation, reports, research, writing essays, and presenting projects in digital formats are the daily activities of our high school students and their expressions of knowledge.

Bring Your Own Device

AISK follows advancements and efficiencies in technology and uses them to improve the student and parent experience with the school. Students use laptops every day for research, presentations, writing, group projects and to access the online learning systems.

Individual student laptops are a necessity for students. AISK requires that all students in grades one through four bring their own iPads, and grades five through twelve bring their own MacBook to school each day. This allows us to ensure that all students—and teachers—can work efficiently together.

AISK provides hardware and software support and minor repairs to machines at no additional charge. Repairs covered by warranty are performed by the local Apple Distributor.

A Sure Path to University

AISK students in 11th and 12th grade choose course loads pursuant to their interests and personal goals. Grade 10 students and their families are counseled in a variety of planning sessions and then make their choices for Grade 11 and 12.

Most of our students aim to complete the full IB Diploma and accept this challenge with enthusiasm.

All of our students achieve an American accredited high school diploma and some may take IB courses in addition to the high school diploma.

AISK-IB Program

AISK-IB PROGRAM

The IB Program is comprised of the IB Core and six subjects of deep study. That IB Core program focuses on:

Theory of Knowledge - an in-depth look at the philosophies of learning and knowledge itself, assessed by an oral presentation and a 1,500-word directed essay.
CAS: Creativity, Action, Service - A range of experiences and projects challenging students to personal reflection, significant outcomes, and thoughtful consideration of their community.
Extended Essay - A significant student-interest led independent research project with findings presented as a 4,000 word paper.

In addition to this core program, most of our students enthusiastically challenge themselves to complete the full IB Diploma. The IB Diploma Program is focused on six academic disciplines in addition to the core program above. Multiple courses are offered in each discipline.

Studies in Language and Literature - Taking two Studies in Language and Literature courses in two different languages qualifies you for a bilingual diploma
Language Acquisition - Both classical and modern languages are available for study
Individuals and Societies - Social Studies, including classical and modern schools of thought
Sciences - A variety of life, chemical, and theoretical sciences
Mathematics - Students will study one course in Mathematics over two years, to truly master the discipline
The Arts - Subjects encourage confidently competent expression through implementation, conversation, and practical exploration of art theory, history, and cultural representation.

Students in the IB Course Program (Path 2) choose up to six IB courses to take at their chosen level. IB Diploma Program students (Path 3) choose three or four subjects to take at a higher level, in addition to the IB Core. All IB Diploma Program students take their remaining courses at the standard level.

College Counseling

At AISK, College Counseling consists of a mix of presentations, workshops, and seminars, as well as focused single-student meetings—both with and without parents—so each Hurricane gets the support they need.

We partner with AIM Educational Services, a local college and graduate school counseling and placement service providing both a complete experience and an exceptional results record. As a result, 98% of our students continue on to tertiary education, many of them with scholarships. Last year alone our students earned over US$3,500,000 in scholarships. Our counseling team is led by AIM founder, Nicole Campbell, and will help your child identify and prepare for a tertiary education in a way that will support them, while continuing to challenge and educate them about their passions, and their potential.

AISK-AIM college counselors are ready to provide you with clearly outlined timelines, procedures, and clear expectations, to help you prepare and make sense of this exciting, and frequently confusing time. Think of them as a group of seasoned coaches. They’re there to give you the knowledge, tools, and support to succeed, even though the heavy lifting will still be on the student.

Chris Walker

My work in education began as a PE and Maths teacher in the UK where I worked for three years. Following that, I moved to an American International School in Budapest, Hungary, where I worked as an Athletic Director. After four years in Hungary, I moved to Amman, Jordan where I worked as a PE teacher and Athletic Director and also taught TOK ( Theory of Knowledge). After three years in Jordan I took a year break, during which I cycled from the UK to Turkey, and then took up a position in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia teaching PE. After two years I moved to Caracas, Venezuela with an aim to move into administration and following a period of working as a PE teacher and Athletic Director I became the assistant principal and IB Co-ordinator and eventually the MS and HS Principal. After nine years in Caracas, I moved to work in an international school in the UK where I worked for six years as the High School Principal. During my time in Venezuela, I began a Masters Degree in International Education at Bath University, UK, which I completed when I returned to England.

My approach to education is holistic and I believe in a rounded education that not only focuses on academics but on all aspects of a student’s development. I find the IB programs and philosophy a great way to achieve this and have enjoyed working in schools that are committed to an all-round education. My desire is that every child succeeds whilst being conscious that success means different things to different people. It is therefore important we help students find ‘the best fit’ when deciding on courses and academic programs and provide each child with educational opportunities that allow each of them to be challenged and motivated and to learn in a safe and secure environment. An environment that not only promotes academic excellence but also recognizes the need to promote physical, social and emotional well being.

Having spent most of my career working in physical education I have always had a passion for sports and enjoy football, rugby, skiing, golf, and long-distance cycling. I am an avid reader and enjoy trying to play the guitar, and both my wife (Tania) and I enjoy cooking. Our two children are both now studying at Universities in the UK but both enjoy the prospect of visiting Jamaica during their vacations, and who wouldn’t!

Denise Campbell Admin Assistant

I have been the Administrative Assistant to the Middle & High School Principal since July 1, 2014. I have a Degree in Management with a minor in Marketing from the University of Technology. I spent most of my working life in Human Resources in the Manufacturing & Finance sector and have happily moved to the Educational sector since 2008.

Having been at AISK for the past 6 years I marvel at just how important the environment and encouragement of teachers can make a significant difference in the learning for a student. I think AISK provides that environment where our students are allowed to be their best selves resulting in student confidence that makes all the difference. A rigid space does not work for everyone and genuine student care is important. This is what inspires me. That I can be here to make the learning experience different or better for my students gets me excited to don my “Mother Hen hat” and just be there. I truly love my job!!

One interesting fact about me is that I love love love to dance. Reading and Sewing are my favorite hobbies.

Once we receive your online inquiry form we will keep in regular contact with you about our programs and events for prospective students and parents. Wondering about a pending admissions decision?

Applications are evaluated only once they are complete. Before contacting us, please be sure you have completed all of the necessary forms for your student’s application. Forms and applications may be filled out online, uploaded and emailed to admissions@aisk.com, printed and physically delivered to the school, or a combination thereof. The admissions office will acknowledge receipt of both the application form and the fee, and will communicate any gaps in the admissions package. The application can only proceed if ALL the supporting documents have been included. In the case of entry to Middle/High School an interview will be scheduled for prospective parents and students with our Middle/High School Principal. For international students a Skype interview will be scheduled. Once an admissions decision is made, the office will contact you and you will receive an Acceptance Letter from the Director of Admissions. A welcome package and a tuition invoice that outlines all the associated costs of enrollment will accompany your Acceptance Letter. To accept the space, you will be required to complete payment of the invoice or make a deposit within five business days to reserve the space.

If Further Evaluation Is Requested

If it is determined that there is insufficient evidence to make a firm accept/deny decision, you will receive written notification from the Admissions Office outlining the additional information required as well as an expected timeline for the process. This may involve additional interviews or evaluation with our school specialists, or contact with the students' current school.
