Approaches to Integrating Technology
Our Apple initiative provides new technology that can be readily used to explore, create, inquire, manipulate and communicate at any place and any time. We have searched the world for the best curriculum design that both stretches our students and also fits well with our 1-1 program.  The AISK technology standards have been adopted from the U.S.  Education Standards for K-12 and will be used by AISK teachers to plan and deliver lessons, taking advantage of technology to enhance learning and prepare students for life in the 21st century.
The Six AISK Technology Standards for K-12

S1    Basic Operations and Concepts
  • Students demonstrate a sound understanding of the nature and operation of  technology systems.
  • Students are proficient in the use of technology.
S2    Social, Ethical, and Human Issues
  • Students understand the ethical, cultural, and societal issues related to technology.
  • Students practice responsible use of technology systems, information, and software.
  • Students develop positive attitudes toward technology uses that support lifelong learning, collaboration, personal pursuits, and productivity.
S3    Technology Productivity Tools
  • Students use technology tools to enhance learning, increase productivity, and promote creativity.
  • Students use productivity tools to collaborate in constructing technology-enhanced models, prepare publications, and produce other creative works.
S4    Technology Communications Tools
  • Students use telecommunications to collaborate, publish, and interact with peers, experts, and other audiences.
  • Students use a variety of media and formats to communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences.
S5    Technology Research Tools
  • Students use technology to locate, evaluate, and collect information from a variety of sources.
  • Students use technology tools to process data and report results.
  • Students evaluate and select new information resources and technological innovations based on the appropriateness for specific tasks.
S6    Technology Problem-solving and Decision-making Tools
  • Students use technology resources for solving problems and making informed decisions.
  • Students employ technology in the development of strategies for solving problems in the real world.

The technology team can assist with integration through provisions for professional staff development opportunities. We are investigating appropriate next steps to provide all of the support we can.

Professional Staff Development

How can the technology team assist with professional development for teachers? Here are a few possibilities that we’ve identified. We’d love to hear your ideas!
A buddy system. Teachers could team together in small groups of 2-4 and schedule regular meetings with IT support staff. We're all willing to help; we will make ourselves available and publish our calendars online so that groups can schedule regular meetings throughout the year.  We can support regular bi-weekly meetings with groups of 2-4 and we can set up an online booking system to make scheduling easy.
We can offer 45-minute demonstrations and courses for key software tools. We would need to schedule those that all staff can participate.  The IT department can be available on any Monday, Tuesday or Friday from 14h45 to 15h30. If there’s interest, we can follow up these introductory sessions and provide sign-up sheets for more in-depth courses on specific subjects.

We can offer brief "Technology Toolbox" software demos (15 minutes or less) in the regular whole-staff meetings. Each demo would highlight a different software program or procedure; we would use these brief sessions to let teachers know what new tools are available. Again, if there’s interest, teachers could follow up with more detailed training when they see a need or use for that specific tool.

We have also provided online support systems to enhance the accessibility of IT systems and support staff. These are available online within the technology support pages on Hurricane.
Available support already includes:
  1. Access to the online ICT help desk.  No more disconnected emails.
  2. Personal 1-1 assistance at any time of the day.  Friendly IT help always available by phone or in person.
  3. A regular technology news update.
  4. Training libraries, self assessment and lesson accelerators using AISK accounts at www.atomiclearning.com.
  5. Online Reservation Systems for the ICT lab and digital equipment.
