High School College Counseling

The process of applying to colleges can be an exciting and rewarding experience provided that you have a clear idea of what is expected at each stage. In the following pages you will find information that is invaluable for you and your family as you start planning your career and make preparations to go to college. The student who methodically prepares for university entrance is much more likely to make the right choice than the student who blindly “chooses” a college in the 12th grade, having little idea of what to do, when to do it, or how to do it. The prestige of a college is of relatively minor importance. What is important is finding the college/university that is right for you!

Ninth & Tenth Grade
AISK students embark on their post-high planning the moment they enter 9th grade.  The goal of the counseling department for 9th and 10th graders is to simply get the students thinking about their futures and realize that their hard work today will pay off tomorrow.  The counselor organizes three career planning sessions (using online resources) with both 9th and 10th graders that are scheduled during the students’ scheduled IT time.  The goal of the sessions is to have each student research a career and then find correlating majors at various universities.  The culminating project is a 2-3 page paper titled “My Future”.

Eleventh Grade
11th graders are scheduled for a College Prep class that meets every other day for the second semester.  The class gives the students an opportunity to explore current trends in the field of higher education, develop a post-high resume, become familiar with college and university entrance requirements, prepare for the SAT/ACT, develop college essays, examine the modern day “college freshman”, and much more.

Twelfth Grade
12th graders are offered an after school session during the first semester in which they have time to meet individually with the counselor, research universities, and complete application materials.  AISK assists students with the organization and mailing of application materials and it is the counseling department’s goal to have all materials mailed out before the Christmas break.
